Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus
1991 Movie by Andrew J. Fenady, Playwright & Co-Writer
Synopsis:
New York City, 1897. It’s almost Christmas and eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon is beside herself with excitement. Suddenly, though, she finds herself facing a crisis of belief when her friends tell her Santa Claus is just a story. Filled with doubt, Virginia asks everyone she knows to tell her the truth: Is Santa Claus real or not? Her father, James, out of work and desperately seeking a way to provide for his family, lovingly suggests she write a letter to the local newspaper with her question. At the New York Sun newspaper, veteran writer Francis Church receives the letter. Francis is struggling to deal with the current loss of his wife but decides to investigate Virginia’s letter for a definitive answer to that classic question…is Santa Claus real?
Funny and heartwarming, this holiday play will delight audiences of all ages.
Note for Actors: This show will be staged as a 1940s radio broadcast. The set will be the radio station. Actors are on stage playing radio voice actors. Actual age of the actor is not critical, the ability of an actor to play the needed age is the focus. There is no required memorization of dialogue for this production.

- No roles are pre-cast.
- Auditions will be from selected sides from the show.
- Bring resume and headshot (a candid photo will be fine).
- Be prepared to list conflicts from Oct 12th through Dec 2nd.
- Time off will be factored in for travel and Thanksgiving.
- Rehearsals 2 to 3 times a week. Dates TBD pending final cast/conflicts.
- All actors will not be called for all rehearsals.
- Tech week begins Monday Nov 30th (no conflict as of that date).
- For certain roles, the ability for actors to do a convincing Brogue is a plus but is not a requirement. If you are interested in the show, please come audition.
- This show includes one to two people who will have no dialogue. Their role will be to produce the sound effects, live on stage, during the production.
Performance Dates:
- Three weekends (10 shows) opening Dec 3rd and closing Dec 20th
o Show Dates: Dec 3-6, 11-13 and 18-20
o Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 pm
o Final Saturday and all Sunday shows at 3:00 pm
Character Overview:
- The characters call for all age ranges. As young as 8 and adults can be any age range (see note about radio voice actors above)
- The total cast will be a minimum of 12 actors. The script allows for more at the director’s discretion.
- Several actors will play more than one part. Vocal variation of those parts will be the key focus.
- Virginia, James and Francis are generally the main roles, however, there are a significant number of lines and characters to be covered by the full cast. This will be great fun for all performers!
- There is no perusal script available. However, YouTube currently has a free video of the 1991 made-for-TV movie starring Richard Thomas and Charles Bronson. That film is basically word-for-word the script we’ll be using.
